What Great Plains End-of-Life Means for Nonprofits

Microsoft Great Plains will reach end-of-life in 2029. Now is the time to plan a low-risk migration to the cloud — here's everything you need to know first.

From Great Plains
to Greater Possibilities.

Great Plains has served nonprofits and public sector organizations well for decades, but its lifecycle is coming to an end.

Microsoft has announced that Great Plains will reach end-of-life in 2029, with security patches ending in early 2031.

It may seem like there is still plenty of time to plan your next move, but nonprofits are especially vulnerable to the effects of waiting too long.

Organizations that use public funding are subject to more scrutiny around how they spend those funds than for-profit businesses; as a result, those without modern, integrated reporting tools are already behind and at risk.

And, since most ERPs are built for for-profit businesses, the capacity of specialized vendors to help implement nonprofit-specific ERP will be more and more limited as the EOL date approaches.

But along with the risk, there is significant opportunity on the horizon for nonprofits that are still using Great Plains.

What's at Stake for Nonprofits

When Great Plains reaches its sunset window, every organization still relying on it will be competing for the same migration resources at the same time. This won’t just include nonprofits—municipalities, school boards, healthcare organizations, and countless other public-sector and zero-based budgeting companies will all be trying to secure consultants, project managers, data specialists, and implementation teams from the same limited pool of consultants and vendors that specialize in not-for-profit organizations.

The result is a predictable capacity crunch: limited availability, less certainty around costs, and far fewer options for phased or well-timed transitions.

Delaying migration only amplifies these risks. As GP moves deeper into its end-of-life cycle, support partners are already shifting their practices toward cloud-first ERP solutions like Business Central. That means the number of teams with meaningful GP expertise is shrinking, even as demand grows.

Migration windows across the Microsoft partner network are filling rapidly (especially for niche sectors like not-for-profit), and organizations that postpone planning will face compressed timelines, rushed implementations, and reduced flexibility around fiscal year considerations, data clean-up, and change management.

As Microsoft winds down support, every year of delay increases risk and cost.

The nonprofits that start planning now will avoid the 2027 implementation bottleneck — and gain the advantage of a modern, cloud-based ERP built for their sector.

Your GP End-of-Life Options

With Great Plains’ EOL date approaching, nonprofits and public sector organizations in the Microsoft ecosystem have three options in 2026.

  • 1-1

    Stay Temporarily

Since Great Plains will continue to be updated until 2029, organizations can choose to use GP in 2026 and beyond. They can also defer their migration decision until 2027 or later—however, the rush to secure implementation partners has already begun, and vendor availability (particularly for specialized sectors like nonprofits) will be even more limited in 2027 and 2028.

  • gp-2

    Migrate to Business Central

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is a solid option for not-for-profit organizations that are currently using Great Plains. It offers the familiarity of the Microsoft ecosystem, integration with other Microsoft applications, and modern cloud ERP functionality. Many nonprofit-specific capabilities will need to be added on via third-party integrations, which can drive up cost and complexity quickly.

  • gp-3

    Choose a Specialized ERP

Organizations that want to stay in the robust Microsoft ecosystem but require nonprofit-specific functionality can choose Sparkrock, the cloud ERP that extends Business Central with features like fund accounting, commitments and encumbrances, fixed asset management, expense claims, collective agreement management, and more.

The Hidden Opportunity
for Nonprofits

To put it bluntly, no one gets excited about tackling an ERP migration project. They take time and they can disrupt normal operations. There is a learning curve for users and some folks don't want to have to change the way they've been working for a long time. All of this is normal.

But here's another blunt truth: nonprofits and public sector organizations still on GP don't have a choice. Within a matter of months, their ERP will become obsolete and unsupported, and create a growing number of operational and security risks. Waiting until 2028 or 2029 to decide on a migration plan will be the equivalent of waiting until Christmas Eve to do your holiday gift-buying—you'll be competing with a crowd of last-minute ERP shoppers, lines will be long, budgets will be exceeded, and the whole experience will be unnecessarily frustrating for you and your team.

It's time to get proactive about your nonprofit's long-term operational health.

Organizations that plan carefully and migrate intentionally can benefit early from purpose-built ERP that will save them time, money, and unnecessary stress every year—not just in 2029.
